Photography

Please be mindful of others when taking photographs and recording audio or video. Photography and recording should not make anyone feel harassed, stalked, disrespected, etc. If someone asks you not to photograph or record them, you must comply and delete what you do have regarding that person upon request. It is best practice to ask someone’s permission before photographing them. If you take candid photographs without permission, you need to then ask permission of the subject after the fact. Do not photograph children without permission of their parents or guardians.

When posting photos online from Legacy Expo, please consider tagging our social media accounts!

Harassment Policy

Legacy Expo attendees should not engage in behavior that makes others feel harassed, stalked, uncomfortable, or disrespected. A key part of our convention goals is to foster a positive and inclusive environment in which to celebrate our love of the Expanded Universe. There will be no tolerance of harassment, including but not limited to on the basis of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type, religion, disability, sexual orientation, age, fandom, etc. Harassment may include but is not limited to threats, verbal abuse, hate speech, stalking, unwanted physical contact, unwanted sexual advances, and inappropriate photography.

If it is determined that an attendee has engaged in harassment, either by a complaint or observation, the perpetrator may be removed from Legacy Expo without a refund. To report harassment, please go to the Legacy Expo check in/information booth in the main lobby of the convention center.

Cosplay Policy

Many members of the Legacy Expo planning team are cosplayers, and we encourage cosplay at our event within the reasonable bounds of safety and public decency.

Costumes must comply with California law in regards to indecent exposure, which is defined as exposing one’s private parts “in any public place, or in any place where there are present other persons to be offended or annoyed thereby.” In addition to complying with that, please also wear some form of shoes at all times for safety and sanitary purposes.

All costumes should be constructed in a manner that is safe to wear in a convention space without potentially causing injury to people or damage to property. Legacy Expo staff reserves the right to ask you to change or remove your costume or components thereof if it is deemed hazardous for reasons including but not limited to sharp edges, shedding material, unsealed paint, etc. Any damage or harm caused by an attendee’s costume is their own responsibility, both legally and financially.

Prop weapons must follow our Weapons Policy, and at all times attendees should use good judgement in how they are holding their props to not be mistaken for a real threat.

Weapons Policy

What would a SWEU convention be without lightsabers? We want you to be able to bring your amazing props to our event, so in the interest of that being safely possible, please read the following policy carefully. Failure to abide by these policies may result in you needing to return your prop weapon to your car or hotel room, or being asked to leave the convention entirely without a refund.

Please be aware that the convention center shares a parking lot and outdoor spaces with the Burbank Marriott Airport Hotel, and members of the general public who are guests at the hotel may not recognize Star Wars blasters as prop weapons and not real guns. Be advised that while hotel security staff are aware that a science fiction convention is occurring on the property, at any point they or members of local law enforcement may treat anything that looks like a real gun as a real gun. Therefore, any prop weapons should resemble real weapons as little as possible, and you should always use good judgement in how you are handling props so that you do not appear threatening to a person who does not know it is a prop.

Any functional and/or real weapons are not permitted. This includes but is not limited to knives (that are not appropriately dull), functional firearms (that shoot real projectiles or cause a real explosion or other forms of damage, including airsoft guns), etc. If you are found with a functional firearm, knife, or other weapon you will be subject to removal from the convention center grounds, and authorities may be contacted.

For prop weapons outside of the category of firearms, please follow the policies below of what is and is not allowed due to the danger of causing serious harm:

  • Projectile prop weapons, such as a crossbow or slingshot for an Ewok costume, should not be able to actually discharge a projectile
  • All edges of props should be dulled to not cause damage to persons or objects, regardless of material.
  • Functional whips are not permitted.
  • Explosives are not permitted.
  • Blunt prop weapons such as lightsabers and gaffi sticks need to be handled appropriately so as not to cause harm to persons or property. Please do not swing lightsabers indoors outside of approved performances, and please use caution and awareness of your surroundings when posing for photos with these props to avoid accidents.
  • Props should not cause excessive noise.
  • All instructions regarding prop weapons given by volunteers or staff members of both Legacy Expo and the venue should be promptly followed.
